American sports like baseball and football are fall staples here in New York City. But with the many local teams either struggling or out of the picture completely, it is another league that is quickly gaining attention of city dwellers of all ages, looking to be apart of something different, original, and cool. It’s the Gotham Girls Roller Derby. Started in 2003, this independent, all-female, do-it-yourself organization has been garnering respect and fans one bout at a time. And selling out their intense and competitive matches to boot.
The Gotham Girls Roller Derby league is made up of four home teams which play within the league- the Bronx Gridlock, Brooklyn Bombshells, Manhattan Mayhem, and Queens of Pain respectively. The people and passion that make up Gotham Girls Roller Derby is infectious- from their live announcers to their competitors. In collaboration with the Gotham Girls, LocalBozo.com is proud to present “I Am Roller Derby,” a short film featuring interviews with the women who make up the league, and footage of them in action from a high impact bout at Hunter College. Four women from different walks of life venture to the world of Roller Derby. Spirited and energetic, but beautiful and dangerous. I am Roller Derby.
