LocalBozo.com has sent one of our correspondents out for some field research, as our own Link Cromwell attempts to bar crawl his way through Hoboken, New Jersey- just a stone’s throw away from Manhattan. Guess what? Your old buddy Link Cromwell loves a country tune every now and then. It’s simply some of the best music to drink to. In my travels throughout Hoboken I had yet to find a venue that embodied a southern appreciation along with a great selection of well-priced booze and good eats. Enter “Sammy’s Roadhouse Bar & Grill,” an ultra-relaxed yet huge joint with an appreciation of all things country- western. Don’t start walking up and down Washington Street looking for it, as this joint is beautifully located off the beaten path far up on First Street. But, damn it’s worth the walk.
I stepped inside “Sammy’s” right after the work bell rang to relax and of course to sample some of their brews. The first thing people will notice besides the distance from the busy downtown is the physical location of the place. The bar and grill is uniquely situated on the ground floor of “The Sky Club Hoboken,” an upscale apartment complex. This is unlike any of the stand alone places I have visited thus far. Upon entering, I was greeted by their friendly bartender who stood behind a long horseshoe shaped bar. Every inch of this place is covered with cool western decor like bull skulls, cowhides, and an awesome selection of rock n’ roll posters. Many of these walls are also filled with huge HD flat screens perfect for catching any major game. At the time of my visit they were playing live coverage of the trials for the 2012 summer Olympics. Once I pulled up a stool, the bartender was more than happy to tell me the happy hour specials of the day. “Sammy’s” is all about value, boasting dirt cheap specials throughout the week. I ventured in on a Thursday, therefore Coronas were three bucks and nachos were five. Arrive on a Friday and take advantage of $3 domestics and $5 house Martinis for your lady! If you’re looking for other beer selections, no problem. The “Roadhouse” has taps loaded with the likes of Victory, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Shock Top, and even the Italian favorite Peroni.
While sipping my brew, I kicked back to many classic and modern country tunes being played at an enjoyable volume over the speakers. I am not a regular country fan, but I instantly became one at this stop. On Wednesday nights, guests can enjoy several rounds of lively pub trivia which is of course paired with great specials. Live music by small bands and singer songwriters occur throughout the month as well, giving you something to tip your hat to. But any southern themed bar worth its salt has to have good comfort food. “Sammy’s” has you covered with a hearty selection of stick to your bone options like their “Fire Roasted Baby Back Ribs” and “Build Your Own Burgers.” So cowpoke, why not tie your horse to the pole, and pony up to Hoboken’s only country-western bar where you will both highly enjoy your evening all while keeping some green in your chaps.
So here’s the rundown…
Preconceived notion – Country western themed bar.
Bar Type – Sports bar and grill with a relaxed southern vibe.
Crowd stereotype – Thirty-somethings of either sex seeking a joint to catch the game and grab some comfort food.
Music – Classic and modern country music.
Value – Yes! Sammy’s has great value all week long- especially during their $3 Coronas and $5 Nachos Thursdays for happy hour.
Good for a….
Date – Yes! Besides the horseshoe shaped bar area, there are plenty of tucked away tables throughout this joint to have a low key night out with that special person.
Hookup – Why not? There’s something about country anthems from the ’70s that make the ladies swoon.
Dance – While line dancing may not be in the cards, Sammy’s has live music throughout the month for you and your friends to rock out to.
Catch up with a friend – Yes, since it’s both out of the way and laid back making it perfect for a catch up chat with a buddy.
First or last drink of the night – First. Go during their stellar happy hours to enjoy a great joint that avoids the trappings of an overly packed Washington Street bar.
Overall – Sammy’s Roadhouse is easily one of the most unique and friendly Hoboken bars I’ve visited thus far. The joint itself is huge, boasting ample seating and plenty of views of HD flat screens playing most games. Pair that with a packed comfort food menu, cheap booze, and an off the beaten path feel – you got yourself a true winner. 8.8.
